Blackboard Discussion Board

Building a sense of community among students is crucial for a successful online experience. With the discussion board tool, course members can replicate the robust discussions that take place in the traditional classroom. Discussions can serve a range of purposes, such as:

  • Students can ask questions about homework, literature or course material.
  • Students can respond to statements that are put by the teacher on the forum.
  • Students can interact, discussion and give feedback to each other. The forum allows he teacher to follow discussions and where necessary, supplement or intervent.

The contributions on the forum can be provided with a review. Within a group, a discussion can be activated which is only accessible to members of the group.

Application in education

When using a discussion board to discuss topics, the student's post is recorded and can be assessed afterwards. Blackboard's Discussion Board provides an easy way to perform this assessment by activating the grading option available for the whole discussion board or a specific thread. If the instructor wants to grade the post using different criteria, using a rubric might come in handy.
